The right base depends on the ground, not the building. A level, well-drained garden with stable subsoil is generally suited to a concrete pad or raft base, poured and left to cure before the frame goes up. A sloping garden, one close to established trees (whose roots can affect ground moisture), or a plot with poor or variable ground conditions is often better suited to screw piles — steel posts wound into the ground to a calculated depth, which avoid a large concrete pour, cause less disruption to the garden, and are easier to correct if a survey reveals unexpected ground conditions partway through. A site visit and ground assessment is the way to confirm which approach is right before any groundworks begin.
